Vikings win two at season-opening Bakersfield tournament
The Long Beach City College baseball team got its season off to a fast start, winning a pair of games on Saturday at the Bakersfield College tournament. LBCC pulled out an 11-inning 3-2 win over Golden West College and came right back to beat host Bakersfield 8-4 later that evening.
In the season opener against Golden West, sophomore Randy Serrato came out firing. Serrato made his return to the mound for the first time since starting and earning the win in the final game of the 2006 state championship.
He was dominant in Bakersfield, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Following a leadoff error in the top of the second, Serrato went on to retire 18 straight batters. He lost the no-hitter and the shutout in the eighth, allowing a pair of singles and walk, but left the game with 12 strikeouts.
Golden West eventually tied up the game in the ninth, but the Vikings rallied for the win in the 11th. Sophomore designated hitter Kevin Castillo led off with a walk and sophomore catcher Derek Junghanel drove in pinch runner Hector Iribe with a double for the game-winning run.
Junghanel led the Viking at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two doubles, a run, and a RBI.
Freshman Teddy Metrosilis earned the win in relief, allowing two hits over the final two innings.
LBCC closed the tourney with its 8-4 win over Bakersfield. Sophomore Adam McNaught allowed three runs (one earned), five hits, and struck out five to earn the win.
Long Beach rallied for three runs in the top of the third and took advantage of two Bakersfield errors and a pair of balks to score four runs in the sixth.
Freshman third baseman Trevor Costin had a big game, driving in three runs with his 3 for 5 night at the plate. Sophomore catcher Alex Van Horn was also 3 for 5 with a double and RBI.
Long Beach (2-0) returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 30) when it faces Orange Coast College. The game was originally scheduled to be played at home, but has been moved to OCC. The non-conference game begins at 2 p.m.
The Vikings will have to wait until Saturday (Feb. 2) to play at home for the first time. LBCC hosts Orange Coast at 12 p.m. |
