Long Beach losing streak ends after 3-0 win over Desert
Sophomore right fielder Daniel Prieto went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and three Viking pitchers combined for a shutout to lead the Long Beach City College baseball team to its first win of the season, a 3-0 non-conference victory over College of the Desert Tuesday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The defending state champions have gotten off to a slow start, opening the season with a six-game losing streak before picking up the win in today’s ball game.
Long Beach got its best pitching performance of the season, getting a strong starting effort from freshman Keith Chipman. Chipman (1-1) scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out three to earn the win.
Sophomore Shane Day pitched a scoreless eighth but ran into some trouble in the ninth. Freshman Adam McNaught came in with two runners on and no outs, but struck out two and got the game ending ground out to pick up the save.
Prieto had RBI singles in the fourth and eighth innings that scored sophomore second baseman Mark Ruiz. Freshman first baseman Sean Beckley kept the Vikings’ eighth-inning rally going with a RBI double to bring in Prieto.
Desert (2-4) starter Austin Bellanich earned the loss despite an impressive outing. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run over seven innings. Catcher Ken Dobbs went 2 for 3 to lead Desert at the plate.
The win improved Long Beach to 1-6 on the season. LBCC is back in action on Thursday (Feb. 8) when it hosts Riverside Community College at 2 pm. |
