Long Beach suffers 6-2 extra-inning loss to Riverside
The Long Beach City College baseball team fell to Riverside Community College by a final score of 6-2 in a 10-inning non-conference game at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Thursday.
Long Beach pounded out a season-high 13 hits but committed five errors and stranded 12 runners on base.
Riverside left fielder Cody Madison launched a two-out grand slam in the top of the 10th to propel the Tigers to the win.
The Vikings got another strong starting pitching performance, this time from sophomore Daniel Prieto. He scattered four hits, allowed one run, and struck out seven over seven innings of work.
Freshman third baseman Curtis Thompson went 4 for 5 with a RBI to lead Long Beach at the plate. Sophomore Jesse Costelow (0-1) was tagged for the grand slam to earn the loss after pitching a perfect ninth.
Tyler Topp (2-1) picked up the win in relief for Riverside (6-2). He allowed no runs and three hits in 2.2 innings. Madison led the Tigers’ offense, going 2 for 5 with 4 RBI and a run.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 1-7 on the season. The Vikings return to action this weekend when they will play at the Cuesta College tournament. LBCC faces host Cuesta on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 10 am. |
