Vikings suffer 8-3 non-conference loss to Santa Barbara
The Long Beach City College baseball team fell to visiting Santa Barbara City College 8-3 in a non-conference game at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Tuesday.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 6-4 overall while Santa Barbara moved to 6-2.
The Vikings couldn’t overcome wild pitching early in the game and some shaky defense.
LBCC pitchers hit five batters, tossed four wild pitches, and committed two errors.
Santa Barbara posted a run in the first, two runs in the second and third, and a single score in the fourth to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
LBCC threatened in the bottom of the fourth. The Vikings tallied four hits but only managed to score one run and left the bases loaded.
Sophomore Keith Chipman (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) and five hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out four and walked none.
Freshman shortstop Hector Iribe led the Vikings at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double.
Santa Barbara’s Blake McFarland (2-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Third baseman Carlos Alonso went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the SBCC offense.
Long Beach is back in action on Thursday (Feb. 14) when it travels to Irvine Valley College for a 2 p.m. non-conference game. |
