Baseball:
Long Beach wins third straight, beat San Diego City 4-1
Things could be turning around for the Long Beach City College baseball team. After starting the season with a dismal 0-6 record, the Vikings have bounced back to win four of their last seven games, including three in-a-row with their 4-1 win over San Diego City College at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Saturday.
The Vikings put together one of their better all-around games this season, getting another good starting pitching performance and solid defense to go with some timely hitting.
Sophomore Josh Williams (1-2) was perfect over the first five innings but ran into some trouble in the seventh before settling down to pick up his first win of the season. Williams allowed six hits and one run in his complete-game effort. He struck out six and walked none.
Freshman first baseman Derek Wurtz had a RBI single in the fourth before the Vikings broke the game open in the fifth.
Sophomore right fielder Daniel Prieto plated a run with a sacrifice fly, but the big blow came from a two-run double by freshman first baseman Sean Beckley.
Wertz (2 for 4) and sophomore third baseman Mark Ruiz (2 for 3) both had two hits to lead LBCC at the plate.
San Diego City rallied for four hits in the bottom of the seventh (SDCC was the home team in this tournament game), including a RBI single by third baseman Nick Spears to get on the board.
San Diego City looked to score more but Williams got out of the bases-loaded, two-out jam by inducing an inning-ending ground out by right fielder Joel Lopez to end the threat.
Spears was 2 for 4 with a RBI to lead SDCC at the plate. Goldie Simmons earned the loss for San Diego City (3-10) after allowing four runs and seven hits over seven innings.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 4-9 overall. They return to action tomorrow (Feb. 18) when they host Southwestern College at 11 am. |
