Baseball:
Vikings make it four in-a-row, cruise past Southwestern 10-4
Sophomore starting pitcher Daniel Prieto went 4 for 5 from the plate and scattered four hits over six innings to lead the Long Beach City College baseball team to a 10-4 non-conference win over Southwestern College on Sunday afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The win was the Vikings’ fourth straight and improved their record to 5-9 overall.
Prieto was impressive both at the plate and on the mound. He knocked around Southwestern pitching for two singles, a double, and a triple. He drove in two runs and also scored twice.
From the mound, Prieto (1-0) allowed three unearned runs and four hits over six innings to earn his first win of the season. He leads the Vikings with a 0.35 ERA this season, allowing just one earned run in 26 innings pitched.
The Vikings got on the board early, posting two runs in the first off Southwestern starter Daniel Stenavich. Long Beach chased Stenavich out of the game in the second when it posted six runs to blow the game open.
LBCC had just two hits but took advantage of three hit batters, two walks, and an error to plate six runs and take the early 8-0 lead.
Freshman first baseman Sean Beckley also had a good game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Freshman catcher Paul Hayes (3 for 4) also totaled three hits and scored two runs.
For Southwestern (6-7), Stenavich picked up the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits in one-plus innings of work. Right fielder Scott McDermand went 2 for 2 with a run and RBI to lead the Southwestern offense.
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 20) when they host Irvine Valley College in a 2 pm non-conference game. |
