Vikings take game one of doubleheader from Santa Barbara

The Long Beach City College baseball team erupted for 10 runs and got an excellent starting pitching performance from sophomore Teddy Mitrosilis to take game one of a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Santa Barbara City College by a final score of 10-3 on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

The win improved LBCC to 6-6, while Santa Barbara dropped to 11-4.

The Vikings pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four Santa Barbara errors in the win.

Mitrosilis turned in his best outing of the young season. He was cruising through five innings, allowing just a second-inning double before he hit some trouble in the sixth.

He ended his afternoon giving up two runs and six hits while striking out four to improve to 1-1 overall.

Long Beach scored single runs in the first and third innings before blowing the game open with four runs in the fourth and fifth.

Sophomore second baseman Trevor Costin (2 for 5) and freshman catcher Jonathan Keener (1 for 4) both drove in two runs for LBCC. Sophomore center fielder Michael Schultz went 1 for 4 with two runs, a RBI, and a stolen base.

Joe McGrew picked up the loss for Santa Barbara. He allowed six runs (four earned) and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Center fielder Corry Krupp went 2 for 4 with a RBI to lead the Vaqueros at the plate.

The Vikings (7-6) went on to take game two by a final score of 9-5 and sweep the doubleheader from Santa Barbara (11-5). Freshman Jared Smith earned the win to improve to 2-0.

Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 24) when it opens South Coast Conference play at Griffith Park to take on L.A. City College.
