Vikings explode for 14-3 win over L.A. City in SCC opener
Long Beach City College erupted for 14 runs and 13 hits in its 14-3 win over Los Angeles City College in its South Coast Conference opener on Wednesday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The win was Long Beach’s fourth in a row and improved its record to 11-5 overall and 1-0 in the SCC. L.A. City dropped to 3-10 and 0-1.
Long Beach scored at least one run in every inning of the game except the fifth. After allowing a pair of first-inning runs to L.A. City, the Vikings came right back in the bottom of the first to plate four runs to take the lead for good.
Freshman third baseman Trevor Costin launched a two-run homerun in the seventh and freshman right fielder Brett Mahoney connected for a solo homerun in the eighth to put exclamation points on the win late in the ball game.
Costin led the LBCC offense with his 3 for 5 effort at the plate. He scored three runs and drove in two. Sophomores Randy Serrato and Sean Beckley, and freshman Brian Loard all had two RBI each.
Sophomore Adam McNaught earned the win to move to 2-0. He allowed two runs and six hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked three.
Freshman Matt Rodriguez pitched three hitless innings of relief before L.A. City rallied for a run in the ninth off LBCC freshman Jimmy De La Paz.
Josh Sotello earned the loss for L.A. City. He allowed six runs (three earned) and seven hits over three innings. Center fielder Chris Espinoza led L.A. City at the plate going 2 for 5 with two runs.
Long Beach returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 28) when it hosts Cerritos College in a 2 p.m. SCC game. |
