Vikings suffer 6-5 extra-inning conference loss to Compton
The Long Beach City College baseball team fell to visiting Compton College by a final score of 6-5 in a 10-inning South Coast Conference game on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the SCC. Compton improved to 9-7 and 1-3 in conference play.
With the score tied 5-5 in the 10th, Compton’s Darrell Hudson led off with a walk and moved to third base on a double by Nathan Metroka. LBCC freshman Scott Watson struck out Eiton Barker for the first out, but couldn’t escape unscathed.
With Hudson breaking for home on the pitch, Jason Thomas’ groundout to second base plated the eventual winning run.
Long Beach led 4-1 after the fourth inning, but Compton scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 advantage.
Long Beach tied the game in the seventh. Kevin Castillo, Derek Wurtz, and Sean Beckley strung together three straight singles to load the bases with one out.
Castillo came in to score on a passed ball, but LBCC wasn’t able to bring in the go-ahead run.
Watson earned the loss in relief for the Vikings to fall to 0-1 on the season. He allowed one run and just one hit in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Third baseman Trevor Costin led LBCC at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run.
James Gonzalez picked up the win for Compton. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run and four hits while striking out four. Shadi Abuhakmeh went 2 for 4 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Compton offense.
LBCC is back in action on Monday when it travels to Pasadena City College for a 2 p.m. SCC game. |
