Long Beach win streak snapped at 4; Vikings fall to East L.A. 6-2
The Long Beach City College baseball team dropped a 6-2 South Coast Conference game to East Los Angeles College on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
Sophomore starting pitcher Daniel Prieto had an uncharacteristic day on the mound. Prior to Saturday’s game, the left-hander had allowed just three earned runs in 39 innings.
But today, East L.A. (17-5, 3-2 SCC) tagged him for nine hits and six runs (five earned) in 6.1 innings.
LBCC took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Prieto helped his own cause with a single to drive in sophomore third baseman Mark Ruiz, who two batters earlier doubled to left-center.
Prieto got himself into trouble in the top of the second. He loaded up the bases by issuing two walks and hit a batter. East L.A. got back-to-back singles from center fielder Jordan Larson and third baseman Scott Stroud to drive in three runs and got another on a passed ball to go ahead 4-1.
East L.A. posted single runs in the sixth and seventh before the Vikings rallied for one more run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the final score of 6-2.
Sophomore left fielder A.J. Bancroft (2 for 4) led the Vikings at the plate with a pair of singles. Freshman Adam McNaught wrapped up the game with 2.2 innings of hitless relief.
Nick Kennedy (3-0) picked up the win for East L.A. after allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits over 6.2 innings. Larson went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI to lead the Huskies’ offense.
The loss snapped the Vikings’ four-game winning streak and moved their record to 11-12 overall and 4-2 on conference play. LBCC is back in action next Thursday (Mar. 15) when it travels to Cerritos for a 2:30 pm SCC game. |
