Long Beach holds on for 3-2 conference win over Pasadena

The Long Beach City College baseball team held off three late Pasadena City College rallies to come away with a 3-2 South Coast Conference win on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

The win improved LBCC to 15-9 overall and 6-3 in the SCC while Pasadena dropped to 2-21 and 2-7 in conference play.

Freshman Scott Watson (3-1) pitched seven scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the eighth on his way to the win.

Watson got himself into trouble in the seventh, but was able to pitch his way out of it.

Pasadena opened the inning with three straight singles from Lee Pope, Adrian Martinez, and Roderick Martinez. With the bases loaded and no outs, Watson struck out Matt Paul and got Tim Sunderland to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Watson wasn’t as fortunate in the eighth.

Pasadena rallied for four hits and got an RBI groundout from Jacob Giambalvo and a run-scoring infield single from Pope.

PCC eventual loaded the bases with two outs, but LBCC freshman reliever Matt Rodriguez got Matt Paul to ground out to second to end the threat and hold the score at 3-2.

Pasadena threatened again one last time in the top of the ninth.

Rodriguez drilled Sunderland with a pitch to lead off the frame before he was lifted for sophomore Randy Serrato.

Serrato quickly got Justin Zialcita to ground into a fielder’s choice out, struck out Brian Ladeira, and induced another fielder’s choice out from Kevin Dultz to close out the game for his first save of the season.

The Vikings were outhit by Pasadena (11-7) but rallied when it needed them most.

LBCC opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Michael Schultz led off with a single, stole second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Hector Iribe. Two batters later, sophomore Derek Wurtz plated Schultz with a single to left field.

Sophomore Sean Beckley had a RBI ground out in the fourth to drive in sophomore Derek Junghanel. And in the seventh, Iribe doubled with two outs and promptly came in to score on a RBI single from freshman Trevor Costin.

Wurtz was 2 for 4 with a RBI to lead the LBCC offense.

For Pasadena, Eisen Castro (0-4) allowed three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to earn the loss. Ladeira was 3 for 5 with a run to lead the Lancers at the plate.

Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Mar. 19) when it travels to College of the Desert for a 12 p.m. non-conference game.
