Serrato named California student-athlete of the month for February
The California Community Colleges Athletic Association (CCCAA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA), has named Long Beach City College sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Randy Serrato the male Student-Athlete of the Month for February, 2008.
Serrato (Bishop Amat HS) has emerged as LBCC’s top starting pitcher and is also among the state and South Coast Conference’s best.
For the month of February, Serrato compiled a 3-1 record and posted a 1.04 earned run average over five starts. In 34 2/3 innings, Serrato allowed just four earned runs, struck out 25, and walked only three batters.
His best start of the month came on February 9 at Antelope Valley College when he tossed eight innings of shutout ball and struck out seven.
Serrato is also dangerous from the batter’s box. For the month he compiled a .412 batting average (14 for 34) with three homeruns, nine RBI, and 13 runs.
Serrato returns after a year off. He was the winning pitcher in LBCC’s 2006 state championship final against Sacramento City College.
For the 2008 season (as of March 19), Serrato is 4-1 overall with a 1.40 ERA in nine games. At the plate, he is hitting a team-best .379 (25 for 66) with five homeruns and 16 RBI. LBCC is currently 16-9 overall.
