Baseball:
Long Beach caps three-game sweep of Desert with 7-3 win
Freshman third baseman Trevor Costin launched a three-run homerun and freshman Matt Rodriguez tossed five innings of scoreless relief to lead the Long Beach City College baseball team to a 7-3 non-conference win over visiting College of the Desert on Thursday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The Vikings swept the three-game series with COD after taking a doubleheader yesterday in Palm Desert and improved their record to 19-9 overall. LBCC has won eight of its last 10 ball games.
Long Beach posted a single run in the bottom of the first and two more runs in the third.
The big blow of the game came off the bat of Costin in the fourth when he smashed a three-run shot just above the 380 feet sign in left-center field.
LBCC added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Long Beach starter Adam McNaught lasted just four innings, allowing three Desert runs in the top of the fourth before he was lifted from the game.
Rodriguez picked up the win out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and a walk over five innings to improve his record to 1-0.
At the plate for the Vikings, centerfielder Michael Shultz (2 for 4, two runs), shortstop Hector Iribe (2 for 5, two runs), and catcher Derek Junghanel (2 for 4, RBI) all had two hits.
For Desert (14-13), Brett Sorenson (1-1) earned the loss after allowing six runs and eight hits over seven innings. Designated hitter Tyler Doran went 2 for 4 with a RBI and run scored.
Long Beach returns to action next Thursday (Mar. 27) when it travels to Pasadena City College for a 2:30 p.m. South Coast Conference game. |
