Long Beach holds off late Mt. SAC rally to win 13-10
Despite scoring double figures in runs for the second straight game, The Long Beach City College baseball team had to endure a late-game scare, but escaped with a 13-10 South Coast Conference win over Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
Long Beach and Mt. SAC (15-16, 5-8 SCC) combined for 23 runs and 32 hits. Seven of the Vikings’ 17 hits were for extra bases.
LBCC (14-16, 7-6 SCC) scored often, getting runs in every inning except the third and eighth.
Freshman catcher Paul Hayes went 4 for 5 at the plate with 2 RBI and a double to lead the Vikings. Sophomore center fielder Chris Cordova launched a two-run homerun and added a sacrifice fly. Sophomore third baseman Mark Ruiz also drove in three runs, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs and a triple.
Sophomore Josh Williams (3-5) earned the win for Long Beach, allowing four runs (two earned) and 11 hits in seven innings. He left the ball game with the Vikings up 13-4 before the bullpen allowed two Mt. SAC runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
But with the tying run on deck, freshman Adam McNaught struck out two of the four batters he faced to close the game.
Mike Oeser earned the loss for Mt. SAC after allowing seven runs and nine hits in just 3.2 innings. Center fielder Mark Reynoso went a perfect 4 for 4 with a two-run homerun and 3 RBI to lead the Mounties at the plate.
