Vikings surge to sixth straight win, go 3-0 at Glendale Tourney
Don’t look now, but it appears the Long Beach City College baseball has gotten its season back on track.
The Vikings won three straight games at the Glendale College tournament last week, picking up a 5-2 win over College of the Desert on Tuesday, a 12-5 victory over Rio Hondo on Wednesday, and closed it out with a 15-7 win against San Bernardino Valley.
LBCC has now won six games in a row to reverse a six-game slide that saw it drop five of its six previous contests. With an 18-16 record, the Vikings are above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Vikings’ bats have come alive as they make a late season push for the playoffs. During the six-game winning streak, LBCC has scored double-figure runs five times and is averaging 12 runs per game.
Against COD, Josh Furlong allowed just two runs (one earned) and six hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Third baseman Mark Ruiz went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, while center fielder Chris Cordova went 3 for 5 with 1 RBI.
Cordova launched his third homerun of the season and drove in two runs in the LBCC’s win over Rio Hondo. Daniel Prieto allowed just two runs on 10 hits in eight innings to earn his fourth win of the season.
And in the win over San Bernardino Valley, designated hitter Derek Wurtz went 2 for 6 with 3 RBI to lead the Vikings. Second baseman Curtis Thompson and Cordova both had three hits and left fielder AJ Bancroft nailed a solo homerun. Josh Williams allowed six runs (only one earned) and 11 hits over seven innings for the win.
Long Beach resumes its South Coast Conference schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Compton College at 2:30 pm. LBCC is currently 8-6 in conference play. |
