Long Beach suffers 7-2 South Coast Conference loss to Mt. SAC
The Long Beach City College baseball team dropped a 7-2 South Coast Conference game to visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The loss dropped LBCC to 25-14 overall and 12-8 in the SCC while Mt. SAC improved to 16-22 and 10-8 in conference play.
Long Beach managed just five hits in the contest and after posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Vikings were shut down by Mt. SAC reliever Kyle Barton.
The Vikings got on the scoreboard first, touching Mt. SAC starting pitcher Erik Vandenakker for two runs.
Left fielder Derek Wurtz singled and designated hitter Randy Serrato was hit by a pitch to start off the inning.
Catcher Derek Junghanel followed that with a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by Mt. SAC first baseman Richie Escalera. After Escalera fell on the play, his rushed throw sailed over the head of Gregg Winger which allowed Wurtz to score from second base and moved Serrato to third.
Second baseman Sean Beckley promptly drove in Serrato with a sacrifice fly to give LBCC its 2-0 lead.
But Mt. SAC came back with four runs in the top of the fifth off LBCC starting pitcher Scott Watson and added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh off reliever Adam McNaught to secure the big win.
Watson (4-3) allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings to pick up the loss. Teddy Mitrosilis closed out the game with two innings of scoreless relief and gave up just one hit.
Barton earned the win in relief to improve to 5-4 on the season. He allowed just one hit and no runs over the final five innings.
Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 22) when it hosts East Los Angeles College in a 2:30 p.m. SCC game. |
