Baseball:
Five-run fourth-inning more than enough for LBCC to beat East L.A.
The Long Beach City College baseball team rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which was more than enough to lead the Vikings to a 7-3 South Coast Conference win over East Los Angeles College Monday afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
Sophomore pitcher Tommy Peale (Millikan HS) improved his perfect record on the mound to a state-best 12-0 while sophomore left fielder Jon Rodriguez (Rancho Alamitos HS) went 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs in the win for Long Beach.
In the big fourth inning, the Vikings pounded out five hits, walked twice, and took advantage of an error to post five runs off East L.A. starter Joseph Gonzales and take a commanding lead that they wouldn’t give up.
Peale wasn’t at his best this afternoon, but was good enough to strike out six while scattering seven hits and allowing three runs over six innings to earn the win. He also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a RBI single in the eighth.
Sophomore Xavier Munoz (Bell HS) pitched two scoreless innings with sophomore Shane Minor (Millikan HS) closing out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Gonzales picked up the loss for East L.A. (19-20-1, 10-10 SCC) allowing five earned runs and nine hits in seven innings. Second baseman Anthony Sena went 3 for 4 with a RBI to lead the Huskies at the plate.
With the win, Long Beach improved to 29-9 overall and 17-3 in the SCC. This season, the Vikings have compiled an impressive 17-1 record at home.
LBCC returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 25) when its travels to Compton College for a 2:30 p.m. SCC game. With a victory, the Vikings and head coach Casey Crook would achieve their first 30-win season since 1999 (32-18). |
