Another late-game rally leads Long Beach to 4-2 win over Compton

Long Beach City College rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-2 South Coast Conference win over Compton College Thursday afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

The win improved Long Beach to 31-9 overall and 19-3 in the SCC. It also extended the Vikings’ home unbeaten streak to 13 games. This season, LBCC has compiled an impressive 18-1 record at home.

The Vikings received another strong pitching performance, getting seven productive innings from freshman starter Josh Williams (Lakewood HS), and two scoreless frames from sophomores Xavier Munoz (Bell HS) and Shane Minor (Millikan HS).

Williams allowed just one earned run and scattered nine hits over seven to pick up the win and improve his record to 3-4. Minor earned his 11th save of the season with his shutout ninth.

With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh, LBCC freshman left fielder A.J. Bancroft led off with a single to left. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder Daniel Prieto (Mayfair HS) and came in to score the go-ahead run on a single by sophomore third baseman Tommy Peale. The Vikings took advantage of a two-out error to score another run and bring the final score of 4-2.

Sophomore first baseman Mike Coladonato (Rancho Alamitos HS) and Peale both had two hits and a RBI to lead the Vikings at the plate.

For Compton (13-27, 4-16 SCC), Richard Quintero picked up the loss, allowing two earned runs and eight hits over seven innings of work. Center fielder Michael Ramos was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with a RBI single in the first.

LBCC returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 29) when its closes out the regular season home schedule with a 12 p.m. game against Pasadena City College.

Long Beach’s magic number to clinch the conference championship is now 1. A win by LBCC on Saturday or a loss by second-place Cerritos on Thursday or Saturday would wrap up LBCC’s first SCC title since 1996.
