Vikings prevail for 13-inning marathon win over Cerritos
The Long Beach City College baseball team pulled out a much-needed 4-3 13-ining South Coast Conference win over rival Cerritos College on Saturday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
The win snapped the LBCC’s three-game losing streak and improved the Vikings to 22-19 overall and 12-9 in conference play. Cerritos dropped to 31-12 and 17-6 in the SCC.
A two-out throwing error by Cerritos second baseman Guillermo Garcia to first in the bottom of the 13th allowed the game-winning run to score for the Vikings.
With one out, LBCC second baseman Curtis Thompson lined a single up the middle. He then moved to second on a ground out by left fielder Sean Plummer.
With two outs, shortstop Armando Arzate grounded a shot to Garcia’s left. He dove and came up with the ball cleanly, but his throw to first base sailed wide as Thompson came all the way around from second to score the winning run.
Freshman Keith Chipman (8-3) earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just three hits and struck out three.
Chipman pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th and stranded two runners on in the 12th.
Third baseman Mark Ruiz led the LBCC offense, going 3 for 5 with a run and RBI.
Miguel Flores (5-3) was credited with the loss for Cerritos. He allowed two hits and the unearned run in 1 1/3 innings pitched. First baseman Trevor Blood went 4 for 5 with a run to lead the Falcons at the plate.
Long Beach travels to Cerritos on Tuesday (May 1) for a 2:30 pm SCC game. |
