Vikings wrap up SCC Championship with 7-1 win over Pasadena
Long Beach City College secured its first South Coast Conference championship in 10 years with its 7-1 win over Pasadena City College Saturday afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field. The Vikings have been nearly unbeatable at home this season, closing out the regular season with a 19-1 record at Hicks Field.
Sophomore first baseman Mike Coladonato (Rancho Alamitos HS) went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two stolen bases while sophomore Steven Conradi allowed one unearned run in seven innings of work to lead the Vikings to the win.
The Vikings got things going in their favor quickly, posting two runs in the bottom of the first inning. LBCC opened the game wide open with three-run rally in the third before closing out their scoring with two more runs in the fourth.
Coladonato beat out an infield single with two outs in the first inning to drive in freshman left fielder A.J. Bancroft (Lakewood HS) for the first run of the game. Coladonato stole second and then came in to score on a Pasadena throwing error by shortstop Silverster Hernandez to make it 2-0.
In the third, the Vikings got RBI singles from freshman right fielder Daniel Prieto (Mayfair HS), Coladonato, and sophomore shortstop Jovanny Bramasco (Bell HS).
Coladonato had the big blow of the game in the fourth. His double to right field bounced off the base of the fence to drive in LBCC’s final run.
Pasadena broke up Conradi’s shutout in the top of the sixth when third baseman Nelson Evangelista came in to score an unearned run on a two-out fielding error by LBCC third baseman Tommy Peale (Millikan HS).
Conradi scattered five hits and struck out five over seven innings to improve to 7-1 on the season. Freshman Jesse Costelow (Millikan HS) and sophomore Michael Acosta (St. John Bosco HS) closed the game with two scoreless innings.
For Pasadena (16-25, 5-16 SCC), Eric Anderson earned the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) and seven hits in three and two-thirds innings. Designated hitter Rafael Chavez-Reyes went 2 for 2 to lead the Lancers at the plate.
For LBCC head coach Casey Crook, it is his second conference title in 13 seasons. In 1996, the Vikings shared the SCC championship with Mt. San Antonio College on their way to a 27-15-1 overall record.
The Vikings take a 32-9 overall and 20-3 SCC record into their regular season finale on Tuesday (May 2) at Pasadena. |
