Vikings earn No. 14 seed for playoffs, travel to No. 3 Orange Coast for Round 1 regional series
The Long Beach City College baseball team is back in the postseason after a one-year absence. On Sunday, LBCC received the No. 14 seed for the 2008 Southern California regional playoffs. The Vikings will travel to face No. 3-seeded Orange Coast College in a round 1 best-of-three series on May 9-10.
Play begins on Friday with game one at Wendell Pickens Field on the campus of OCC at 2:30 p.m. Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with game three to follow shortly after if necessary.
Despite finishing tied for fourth place in the South Coast Conference with a 13-11 record this season, LBCC closed its schedule with the 16th-best RPI rating in Southern California which greatly increased their chances of making the postseason.
The Vikings take a 26-18 overall record into their series with Orange Coast. LBCC makes its fifth playoff appearance under 15th year head coach Casey Crook.
OCC finished second in the Orange Empire Conference with a 14-7 record and closed the regular season with a 30-13-1 overall record.
Orange Coast and Long Beach met early in the 2008 season (Jan. 30, Feb 1-2) for a three-game series. OCC took two of three from the Vikings, winning 8-6 and 11-1 at home. LBCC avoided the sweep with a 3-2 win at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on February 2.
The winner of the round 1 regional series advances to a four-team super regional double-elimination tournament on May 16-18.
LBCC looks to capture its sixth state championship after last winning it in 2006. |
