Vikings continue playoff run with
5-3 win over L.A. Pierce
No. 3-seed Long Beach City College took advantage of five L.A. Pierce College errors and got three innings of scoreless relief to pull out a 5-3 win in its opening game of the 2006 Super Regional tournament at Riverside Community College.
Freshman starter pitcher Josh Williams allowed three earned runs and just four hits in five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 4-4 on the season.
Sophomore Brian Hill pitched two and one-third innings of scoreless relief before sophomore closer Shane Minor got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth unharmed to close out the game and pick up his 16th save of the year.
Long Beach jumped on the No. 6-seed Brahmas early, posting three unearned runs thanks to two errors and a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. Sophomore designated hitter Jon Rodriguez laced a two-run single down the left field for the big blow of the inning.
Pierce committed two more errors in the third, which allowed another LBCC run to score.
Williams was cruising through the Pierce lineup, allowing just one hit in five innings before the Brahmas finally figured him out in the top of the sixth.
Pierce got three singles off Williams and added another off Hill to plate three runs and make it a ballgame at 4-3.
LBCC got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Jovanny Bramasco nailed a one-out double to the left-field gap, moved to third on a ground out by Rodriguez, and came in to score on a two-out wild pitch by Pierce reliever Ryan Platt.
Things got scary for the Vikings in the top of the ninth. Pierce opened up the frame with three straight singles to greet Minor out of the bullpen.
But Minor got catcher Trevor Andrews to hit into a 1-2-3 double play and struck out second baseman Donald Barns to close out the game.
Long Beach (36-9) advances in the winner’s bracket and will face No. 7 Rio Hondo on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Riverside. Rio Hondo upset No. 2 Riverside 8-4 in the other opening round game.
Pierce (33-11-1) will take on Riverside in the loser’s bracket on Saturday at Cal Baptist University at 10 a.m.
