Baseball:

Peale's three-hitter advances LBCC to Super Regional championship

No. 3-seed Long Beach City College is one win away from advancing to the state championship tournament after cruising to a 4-0 semifinal win on Saturday over No. 7 Rio Hondo College in the Super Regionals at Riverside Community College.

Rio Hondo went on to defeat No. 2 Riverside by a final score of 4-1 this afternoon to eliminate Riverside from the playoffs.

Long Beach will take on Rio Hondo for the second time this weekend on Sunday in the championship game of the Super Regionals at RCC's Evans Sports Complex at 12 p.m.

LBCC needs to beat Rio Hondo just once to advance to next weekend’s COA Baseball Championship, which takes place May 27-29 in Fresno.

Sophomore Tommy Peale pitched one of his best games of the season this afternoon, tossing a three-hit complete-game shutout to improve his perfect record to 15-0. Peale struck out five and walked two.

Both Peale and Rio Hondo starter Bryan Banes were cruising through the game until the Vikings finally got on the board in the top of the fifth, which started a string of four consecutive one-run innings.

LBCC plated a two-out run with three straight singles by Peale, first baseman Mike Coladonato, and shortstop Jovanny Bramasco to go up 1-0.

In the sixth, third baseman Jaime Munoz got things going with a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Ryan Averkieff. Center fielder Chris Cordova followed that with a single to center to bring home Munoz and give LBCC a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Vikings took advantage of a huge error by the Rio Hondo defense. Bramasco reached base on a throwing error by Rio Hondo third baseman Brent Chavez over to first that sailed into right field. This allowed Bramasco to advance all the way to third, but when no one was covering home plate, Bramasco walked in to score.

Long Beach posted its final run in the eighth. Munoz led off with a double down the left-field line and came in to score two batters later on a single by left fielder A.J. Bancroft.

Bancroft was 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Peale, Bramasco, and Munoz all had two hits.

Banes (7-3) picked up the loss for Rio Hondo (36-11) after allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits over 7 1/3 innings.
