Florida selects LBCC All-American Prieto in 23rd round of MLB Draft
Long Beach City College 2007 All-American pitcher/outfielder Daniel Prieto was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft on Friday.
Prieto was the draft’s 706th overall pick and taken on day 2. The 6-0, 190 left-hander out of Mayfair High School recently completed his second season with the Vikings.
As a sophomore, Prieto earned first-team All-South Coast Conference utility honors after posting a 5-3 overall record with a 1.72 earned run average. He totaled 85 strike outs in 94.1 innings and also posted two complete games.
From the plate, Prieto led the Vikings with a .360 batting average (64 for 178) and 39 RBI. He also added 12 doubles, five triples, and was 10 for 13 on stolen base attempts.
In the field, Prieto committed just two errors in 80 chances.
As a freshman, Prieto played a key role in helping lead the Vikings to the 2006 state championship. Prieto was named second-team All-SCC in the outfield after hitting .277 with 13 RBI.
Prieto is the third Viking since 2002 to be drafted by a MLB team. Outfielder Eugene Edwards was a 40th round pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2005 and shortstop Omar Bramasco was taken in the 16th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2002. |
