Nine sign letters of intent to continue play at next level

Nine Long Beach City College Vikings have signed national letters of intent to continue their academic and football careers at four-year universities, with more expected in the weeks to come.

Three of those nine will be wearing NCAA Division I uniforms, with defensive tackle Fred McCutcheon (Cabrillo HS) heading to San Jose State University, wide receiver Joe Garcia (Los Alamitos HS) going to the University of Nevada in Reno, and defensive end Maurice Murray (Poly HS) traveling south to New Mexico State University.

McCutcheon earned J.C. Grid-Wire All-American honors and was also named first-team All-Mission Conference this past season. Murray was a second-team all-conference selection in 2004.

Also making their choices on the first day of the signing period were wide receiver Jerryll Martin (Wilson HS; Minnesota State University-Makato), quarterback Tim Bessolo (Los Alamitos HS; Sacramento State University), defensive tackle Alii Seiuli (St. George, UT; Sacramento State), offensive tackle Robert Mareko (Pago Pago, Samoa; Iowa Wesleyan College), strong safety Jamar Barnes (Las Vegas, NV; Central Missouri State University), and corner back Chris Weingarten (St. Petersburg, FL; Humboldt State University).

Kicker Jeffrey Hastings (Poly HS), offensive tackle Alexander Freeman (Poly HS), offensive lineman Roland Courtney (Millikan), and wide receiver James Wilson (Jordan) are all also expected to sign soon along with up to nine more from this past year’s squad.

LBCC compiled a 7-5 overall record in 2004 and captured the Mission Conference American Division championship. The Vikings were champions of the American Bowl and advanced to the Southern California semifinals.
