Football:
No. 10 Vikings explode for 62-17 win at Ventura in season opener

Preseason All-American quarterback Alex Aispuro threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 10 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College to a 62-17 thrashing of Ventura College Saturday in its 2005 season opener at Larrabee Stadium in Ventura.

The 62-point outburst by the Vikings was the fourth-highest single-game total in LBCC history. Long Beach scored 63 points against El Camino in 1994 in its last 60-point contest.

Aispuro started the game rusty, but exited the match late in the third quarter throwing 17 for 30 for 300 yards with four TDs and no interceptions. He also snuck in for a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Aispuro connected with sophomore wide receiver Stanley Franks for three of those touchdowns. Franks had a big game, grabbing eight passes for 120 yards. Freshman LaTroy Dinkins caught two passes, both touchdowns, for 54 yards.

Sophomore kickoff returner Daniel Hemphill also turned in a historic moment for the Vikings. With 11:22 remaining in the game, Hemphill returned Ventura ’s kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The 97-yard return ranks second all-time in school history.

The defense was also a big part of the game, holding Ventura scoreless until midway in the third quarter. LBCC lead 26-0 at halftime and was up 35-0 before the Pirates turned in an eight-play, 60-yard drive for a touchdown with 6:25 left in the third.

Sophomore linebacker Antonio Steele was everywhere on defense tonight. He led LBCC with six tackles and 1.5 sacks, while intercepting a pass and breaking up another.

For Ventura (0-1), quarterback Brian Bishop threw 12 for 21 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He hooked up with wide receiver Clint Dillion for both TDs, while Dillion caught four passes for 61 yards.

LBCC (1-0) returns to action next week when it hosts Moorpark College for a 5 pm non-conference game at Veterans Stadium.
