Long Beach offense explodes in 44-34 opener win at Harbor
Sophomore wide receiver Stephen Burton scored three touchdowns and totaled 238 all-purpose yards in Long Beach City College’s 44-34 non-conference win at Los Angeles Harbor College in both teams’ season opener.
New LBCC head coach Mike Reisbig earned his first career win in his initial try and the Viking offense made sure of it by collecting 517 total yards.
Burton caught four passes for 136 yards, returned three kickoffs for 99 yards, ran twice for three yards. He recovered a fumble in the LBCC end zone, connected with sophomore quarterback Josh Powell on a 73-yard TD pass, ran in for a score from one yard out to total 21 of LBCC’s 44 points.
Powell threw for LBCC career-best 306 yards on 17 of 33 passing with no interceptions and one TD pass. He also rushed seven times for 18 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown score with 8:42 left in the third quarter that gave the Vikings a 31-28 advantage and the lead for the rest of the game.
The LBCC rushing attack also exploded as the Vikings ran for 200 yards in a game for the first time since October 30, 2004.
The Vikings totaled 211 yards rushing, led by freshman Travell Washington. He was impressive in his debut, running 16 times for 138 yards, including a 78-yard breakaway score.
Sophomore Darren Tubbs also chipped in with 49 yards on nine rushes with a three-yard TD run.
Long Beach (1-0) returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 13) when it hosts El Camino College in 6 p.m. non-conference game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The winer takes home the “Battle Axe,” the perpetual trophy given to the winner of the rilvary game. |
