Long Beach suffers 32-16 non-conference loss at Moorpark
There would be no fourth-quarter comeback this week for the Vikings as they trailed Moorpark College 16-0 after the first quarter and never recovered. LBCC fell by a final score of 32-16 in non-conference action on the road.
The Raiders opened the game with 19 unanswered points before the Vi8kings finally got on the board with 3:36 left in the second quarter.
Sophomore Ryan Howard’s 61-yard punt return led Long Beach to a 26-yard field goal by sophomore Froylan Sanchez and the Vikings trailed 19-3.
Moorpark (2-0) took advantage of a LBCC fumble on the one-yard line in its next drive and turned it into a touchdown with 46 seconds left in the half to make the score 25-3 at the break.
The Raiders closed their scoring for the night following a massive 12-play, 85-yard drive that took up 5:34 in the third quarter that was capped by a 31-yard TD pass from Cam Merrill to Shawn Trowbridge.
Long Beach rallied for two touchdowns late in the game.
Freshman Troy Guthrie plowed his way into the end zone with a one-yard score with two seconds left in the third and freshman backup quarterback Matt Fitts connected with sophomore Paul Robinson for a 8-yard TD reception as the final whistle blew at the end of the fourth quarter.
Freshman quarterback Josh Powell threw for 96 yards on 11 of 19 passing in starting duties for the Vikings. Sophomore wide receiver Ben Holloway led the LBCC offense with 8 catches for 92 yards. Robinson caught 5 passes for 56 yards, including his 8-yard TD.
On defense, Don Tupou led the Vikings with 6 tackles and 1 pass break up. Jonte Stroud posted 5 tackles and blocked a Moorpark PAT kick. Junior Fasavalu intercepted his first pass of the season and added 4 tackles.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 1-1 on the season. The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Sep 16) when they travel to Saddleback College for a 5 pm Mission Conference interdivisional game.
