Football:
Defense shines in Vikings’
39-14 win over Moorpark

Long Beach City College dominated on both sides of the ball, as the Vikings cruised to a 39-14 win over visiting Moorpark College Saturday night in a non-conference game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Long Beach defense looked strong, holding Moorpark to 181 yard of offense. The defense came up with numerous big plays, forcing two fumbles, breaking up seven passes, blocking a punt and field goal attempt, while posting two sacks and one interception.

Just three plays into the game, the defense set the tone for the night. LBCC sophomore defensive tackle Josh Tauanuu (Poly HS) knocked the ball lose from Moorpark running back Mario Conti and sophomore linebacker Romelle Terry (Los Banos) returned the ball 35 yards for a touchdown to give Long Beach a 7-0 lead with 14:36 left in the first quarter.

LBCC held Moorpark scoreless all the way until just before the end of the first half. Defensive back Michael Stuart returned a fumble recovery 43 yards with 1:21 left in the second to get the Raiders on the board (18-7).

Tauanuu, sophomore linebacker Willie Davis (Poly), and freshman safety Junior Fasavalu (Poly) all totaled five tackles each to lead the defense, with Davis picking up a 12-yard interception return.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro (Jordan) tossed four touchdowns passes for the second straight game and totaled 223 yards passing on 18 of 30 throwing to lead the Vikings to the win.

Sophomore wide received Stanley franks (Downey) caught two of those TDs, while collecting five receptions for 74 yards. Freshman wide receiver Ben Holloway (Detroit, MI) also had six catches for 61 yards, including a 20-yard TD reception.

For Moorpark (1-1), running back Matt Morris rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries, while quarterback Cody Holland threw 10 for 21 with an interception for 75 yards. Wide receiver Tony Washington caught four passes for 60 yards.

The win moved Long Beach to 2-0 on the season. The Vikings have outscored it opponents 101-31 this season.

LBCC returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 17) when it hosts Saddleback College in a 5pm Mission Conference interdivision game. The Vikings will look to avenge their 41-25 loss to Saddleback in last year’s Southern California Regional Playoff semifinal game.
