Football:
Second-quarter mistakes doom Vikings, fall to El Camino 41-21

The Long Beach City College football team suffered a 41-21 non-conference loss to visiting El Camino College on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Two fumbles and a blocked punt late in the second quarter turned a tight 10-7 El Camino lead into a big 31-7 advantage that LBCC would not recover from.

The Long Beach offense looked like it was in full gear, taking the opening drive of the game 74 yards over 10 plays and capped it with a three-yard Stephen Burton touchdown run to put LBCC up 7-0 at 10:04 in the first quarter.

El Camino jumped ahead 10-7 after an 11-yard TD pass from James Coy to Ken McRoyal (:36, first quarter) and a 23-yard field goal by Brian Blumberg.

The score remained 10-7 until things fell apart for the Vikings with under five minutes to go in the half.

El Camino’s Alphonso Brutus blocked a punt at the LBCC 16-yard line and ran it in from seven yards out for a touchdown at 4:34.

A pair of fumbles by LBCC sophomore running back Darren Tubbs on consecutive drives gave El Camino the ball back deep in Viking territory and resulted in two more touchdowns and El Camino led 31-7 at halftime.

Tubbs got some redemption after his one-yard TD run at 11:04 in the third to cut ECC’s lead to 31-14.

El Camino extended its lead to 41-14 after a 38-yard Coy TD strike to William Bullock (8:38, third) and a 45-yard field goal from Steven Locke (12:46, fourth).

Burton closed the scoring with his second touchdown of the night, a one-yard run at 8:57 in the fourth to bring the final score of 41-21.

Burton totaled 113 all-purpose yards, leading LBCC with six receptions for 55 yards to go with three rushes for seven yards, and two kickoff returns for 51 yards. Burton leads Long Beach with five touchdowns in just two games this season.

Sophomore quarterback Josh Powell threw for 180 yards on 16 of 35 passing with no interceptions. Sophomore DB George Aludogbu led the LBCC defense with nine tackles (8 solo) and also broke up a pass.

James led El Camino (2-0) with his 17 of 27 passing effort for 184 yards and three touchdowns. With the win, El Camino retains the War Axe, the perpetual trophy given to the winner of the rivalry game.

Long Beach (1-1) gets a shot at another rivalry trophy next Saturday (Sept. 20) when it travels to Cerritos College for a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Falcon Stadium for the Crosstown Cup.
