Football:
Long Beach comeback falls short, lose at Saddleback 26-17
Long Beach City College opened up its 2006 Mission Conference schedule Saturday night with a 26-17 interdivision loss at Saddleback College.
Freshman running back Troy Guthrie had a pair of touchdowns runs, including a one-yard scoring plunge with 7:58 remaining in the fourth that cut Saddleback’s lead to two points at 19-17.
After stopping the Gauchos on their ensuing drive, the Vikings had one more chance to take the lead, starting on their own 15-yard line with 5:35 left in the game.
Facing a fourth-down and five-yards to go, the Vikings went for it with under three minutes remaining in the contest.
But LBCC freshman quarterback Josh Powell was sacked for the seventh time, giving the ball and the game to Saddleback.
Gaucho running back PT Gates closed the scoring with his third rushing touchdown of the contest from 13 yards out to bring the final score of 26-17.
The Vikings rushed for just 62 yards in the game, led by Guthrie’s 29 yards on 10 carries. Powell threw for 145 yards on 19 for 29 passing with 3 interceptions. Sophomore wide receiver LaTroy Dinkinks caught 5 of those passes for a team-best 82 yards.
For Saddleback (3-0), Gates ran for only 78 yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Nick Nelson was 12 for 25 for 205 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 1-2 on the season. The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Sep 23) at 5 pm when they host Golden West College in a Mission Conference interdivision game.
