Football:
No. 6 Long Beach falls to No. 25 Saddleback 41-14 in conference showdown

The No. 6 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College football team suffered a 41-14 loss to visiting 25th-ranked Saddleback College Saturday night in a Mission Conference interdivision game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Saddleback led 24-0 at halftime and held the Vikings scoreless all the way until late in the third quarter.

The Vikings finally got on the board with 3:34 left in the third. Sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro (Wilson HS) connected with freshman wide receiver Ben Holloway (Detroit, MI) for a 39-yard touchdown to put LBCC down 31-7.

On Saddleback’s next possession, freshman corner back Brian Williams picked off Gaucho quarterback Kasey Peters’ pass and returned it 16 yards to Saddleback’s 40 yard line.

Aispuro found freshman wide receiver LaTroy Dinkins (Jordan HS) on the Vikings’ first play for a 40-yard TD and Saddleback’s lead was cut to 31-14 with 2:24 left in the third.

LBCC would get no closer as Saddleback closed out the fourth quarter scoring with a 36-yard field goal by Derik Martinez and a six-yard TD pass from Peters to wide receiver Quincey Lever.

The Gauchos pounded the ball on the ground, collecting 270 yards rushing and totaled 492 yards of offense. Running back P.T. Gates had a big game, rushing for 160 yards on 23 carries with one touchdown.

Peters threw for 204 yards on 18 of 30 passing with 2 touchdowns, while Lever caught 10 passes for a game-high 147 yards with one TD.

Despite the lopsided score, Aispuro passed for 308 yards on 23 of 42 passing with 2 touchdowns. It was his second 300-yard passing game of the season. Holloway had a big night receiving, catching six passes for 107 yards with a touchdown.

Sophomore defensive end Henry Filo (Jordan HS) led the LBCC defense with 9.5 tackles (7 solo) and added two sacks. Sophomore defensive tackle Fale Westbrook (Oceanside, CA) chipped in with 7.5 tackles (7 solo) and also had a sack.

Saddleback corner back Alsid Panteau led the Gaucho defense with 5.5 tackles (4 solo) and broke up two passes.

The loss dropped Long Beach to 2-1 on the season, while Saddleback improved to 2-1.

The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Sep. 24) when they will try to get back on track with a 5 pm Mission Conference interdivisional game at Golden West College.
