Football:
Struggles continue as Vikings fall to rival Cerritos 47-10

It was another tough Saturday night for the Long Beach City College football team as the Vikings suffered a 47-10 loss to rival Cerritos College in a non-conference game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The loss dropped LBCC to 0-3 overall while Cerritos improved to 3-0. The Falcons also regained possession of “The Crosstown Cup,” the perpetual trophy given to the winner annually of the rivalry game.

For the third straight week, the Long Beach defense allowed over 500 yards of offense but only allowed 47 points which was down from 71 and 65 points the previous two weeks.

Despite the lopsided score, the game was close in the first quarter. Cerritos took its opening drive 85 yards, capped by a 30-yard TD catch by wide receiver Marquis Williams from quarterback Chris Morales to go ahead 7-0 at the 11:17 mark.

The Vikings appeared poised to tie the score on their final drive of the first quarter. On fourth down and two yards to go from the Cerritos 31-yard line, freshman quarterback Kevin Lubner connected with sophomore wide receiver Darrius Young for a 31-yard reception to put the Vikings at the Cerritos two-yard line.

But the Cerritos defense got held tough and forced Long Beach to settle for a 21-yard David Covey field goal.

From that point, it was all Cerritos. The Falcons went on to score 28 unanswered points to take a commanding 41-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.

LBCC finally put some more points on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter. Lubner led the Vikings on a 12-play, 86-yard drive and closed it with a four-yard touchdown pass to freshman running back Ruben Laurente to make the score 41-10 with 1:57 to go in the contest.

The Falcons’ Dion Curry took the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to close the scoring.

Freshman running back Daveon Barner ran for 100+ yards for the second week in the row. He collected 108 yards on 27 carries to lead the LBCC offense.

Lubner was 16 for 29 for 151 yards with a touchdown and interception and Young caught seven passes for 79 yards.

On defense, freshman cornerback Darius Williams-Fox led all with 14 tackles (12 solo). He also forced a fumble and had one pass break up. Sophomore linebacker Richard Barnes totaled six tackles (five solo) and had two sacks.

After three tough games, Long Beach will face an American Division opponent next Saturday (Sep. 26) when it travels to West Los Angeles College for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
