Football:
Long Beach gets back on track with 49-28 win at Golden West

After a disappointing loss to Saddleback last week, the Long Beach City College football bounced back with a much-needed 49-28 Mission Conference interdivision win at Golden West College on Saturday night.

Tonight, the Vikings looked more like the team that blew out Ventura 62-17 and Moorpark 39-14 in the first two weeks of the season.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro (Jordan HS) threw four touchdown passes for the third time this season and sophomore running back Grant Thorne (San Pedro) had LBCC’s first 100-yard rushing game of 2005 and scored three TDs to lead the Long Beach offense to the win.

The Viking defense also returned to form, scoring two touchdowns on a blocked punt and an interception return.

Golden West opened up the game with a 3-0 lead after a 22-yard field goal by Jim Dingman.

Golden West would not score again until moments before the end of the second quarter and the Vikings went on to post 28 unanswered points.

Aispuro tossed a 26-yard touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Stanley Franks (Downey) with 7:01 left in the first and came back down the field again with a 10-yard TD pass to Thorne with 6:02 remaining in the quarter.

With 12:35 left in the second, sophomore Paul Robinson (Birmingham, AL) blocked a Golden West punt attempt at the Rustler 25-yard line. Freshman Peter Sio (Jordan) picked up the ball at the 20 and ran it in for the touchdown.

The LBCC defense wasn’t done scoring. On Golden West’s next drive, freshman defensive end Jermaine Seiuli (Paramount) batted down Rustler QB Joey Halzle’s pass, grabbed it out of the air and stumbled 30 yards for a touchdown.

Thorne had a 14-yard touchdown run in the third and closed the Vikings’ scoring in the fourth with a 16-ayrd TD reception from Aispuro.

Freshman offensive lineman Hayden Kahele (Honolulu, HI) also got in on the scoring. After Robinson fumbled a reception from Aispuro, Kahele picked up the loose ball and ran it in 15 yards for a third quarter touchdown.

Aispuro closed the game throwing for 240 yards on 17 of 28 passing with four TDs and no interceptions. Thorne rushed for a season-best 105 yards on just eight carries. He also caught three passes for 44 yards with two receiving TDs while running for one.

Franks was LBCC’s top receiver, catching six passes for 108 yards with one touchdown.

On defense, sophomores Willie Davis (Poly) and Damion Porter (Lakewood) both totaled six tackles (5 solo), while Porter broek up two passes and blocked a field goal attempt.

The win improved LBCC to 3-1 overall, while Golden West fell to 1-3. The Vikings host rival Cerritos College next Saturday (Oct. 1) in a battle for the Cross-town Cup. Kick off is set for 5 pm at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
