Football:
Vikings hang on for first win, beat West L.A. 44-43

The Long Beach City College football team earned its first win of the season on Saturday to break a string of three straight losses as the Vikings escaped West Los Angeles College with a 44-43 non-conference win.

LBCC improved to 1-3 overall heading into its bye-week while West L.A. dropped to 1-2 this season.

Freshman quarterback Kevin Lubner tossed three touchdown passes and also ran in for a pair of TDs to lead the Long Beach offense.

His one-yard touchdown run gave the Vikings a commanding 41-23 lead with 13:55 left in the fourth quarter.

But West L.A. rallied back. On the ensuing drive, West L.A. quarterback Spencer Phillips led the Wildcats on an eight-play, 58-yard drive and capped it with a seven-yard TD pass to Dominic Cooper. A two-point conversion cut the Vikings’ lead to 41-31.

A 23-yard field goal by LBCC freshman David Covey with 5:04 left in the game put the Vikings in front 44-31.

Phillips came back again, tossing a two-yard TD with 2:57 left and then closed an eight-play, 50-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run of his own with 57 seconds remaining to set up a big PAT attempt.

With the score 44-43, West L.A. head coach Marguet Miller elected to go for two points and the win. Phillips completed his pass to Javon Crowder in the right flat, but he was stopped short of the end zone by the Viking defense.

The Vikings held on to the ensuing onsides kick try and ran out the clock for the win.

Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Joseph caught a pair of third-quarter touchdowns (23, 28-yards) and sophomore WR Darrius Young also hauled in a 33-yard TD reception for LBCC’s opening score.

Sophomore defensive back Genesis Fonoimoana broke away for a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at the 4:28 mark in the first quarter. He also added eight tackles (6 solo), including two tackles for losses.

Freshman running back Daveon Barner ran for 100 yards for the third straight game, collecting 111 yards on 33 attempts.

Long Beach is off this weekend before beginning Southern Conference play on October 10. The Vikings travel to Grossmont College for a 1 p.m. contest.
