LBCC offense stumbles, Vikings fall to Grossmont 33-7 in Southern Conference opener
The Long Beach City College football team suffered a 33-7 loss in its Southern Conference opener to visiting Grossmont College on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Grossmont improved to 4-2 and 2-0 in the SC.
Things looked good for the Vikings early on as sophomore quarterback Josh Powell led Long Beach to a nine-play, 77-yard scoring drive following the opening kickoff.
Powell capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Leonard Willis to give Long Beach its only lead of the game at 7-0.
But from then on, it was all Grossmont as the Griffins scored 33 unanswered points.
Grossmont running back Garen Demery had a pair of touchdown runs (22, 4-yards) in the second quarter and kicker Brandon Bogatay accounted for 15 points (4 for 6 field goals, 3 PATs) to lead the Griffins to the win.
The Grossmont defense put a hurt on Powell as he was sacked nine times. Powell closed the game throwing for 169 yards on 16 of 31 passing with a TD and two interceptions.
Freshman wide receiver Brandon Joseph led LBCC with seven catches for 78 yards while Willis pulled in five receptions for 48 yards.
Freshman DB Ellis Anderson led the Viking defense with 13 tackles (8 solo) and an interception.
The Vikings return to Southern Conference action next Saturday (Oct. 18) when they travel to Saddleback College for a 6 p.m. game. |
