Football:
El Camino offense runs wild on Long Beach, Vikings fall 37-14

The Long Beach City College football team opened up Mission Football Conference American Division play with a 37-14 loss to rival El Camino College on Saturday at Veterans Stadium.

The win by El Camino gave the Warriors back possession of “The War Axe,” the perpetual trophy awarded to the winner of the rivalry game. LBCC and El Camino played each other for the first time since 2002, a game won by the Vikings.

Long Beach had a tough time containing an El Camino offense that rushed for 255 yards.

El Camino began the contest scoring on its first drive. ECC went 49 yards and 11 plays and took a 7-0 lead after Ken Ashley’s one-yard touchdown run at the 7:29 mark in the first.

But Long Beach was able to keep pace, coming right back on its ensuing drive to tie up the game.

A 59-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Andrew DeFelice to freshman wide receiver Stephen Burton took the Vikings down to the El Camino five-yard line, setting up a five-yard TD pass to freshman tight end Dalton Etimani with 4:03 on the clock.

But from that point, it was all El Camino. The Warriors scored 30 unanswered points, getting touchdowns runs from Tavares Presley, Emmanuel Butler, and Corey Surrency, a 10-yard TD pass from Boo Jackson to Verran Tucker, and a 24-yard field goal from Josh Weaver.

The Vikings finally broke the string with a late fourth-quarter touchdown.

Long Beach took advantage of two El Camino personal fouls to advance its drive. Freshman running back Darren Tubbs’ eight-yard TD reception with 7:17 left in the game from DeFelice capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive to bring the final score of 37-14.

DeFelice threw for 192 yards and two TDs on 16 of 26 passing with two interceptions. Burton led LBCC receivers with three catches for 96 yards.

On defense, freshman defensive end Bryan Braman had an outstanding game. He posted 17 tackles (10 solo), one sack and forced a fumble.

The loss dropped Long Beach to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the American Division. El Camino, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation, moved to 5-1 and 1-0 in division play.

Long Beach is back in action next Sunday (Oct 20) when it travels to Palomar College for a 1 pm MFC American Division game to be played at Escondido High School.
