Last-minute field goal hands LBCC 26-24 loss at Mt. SAC
Long Beach City College opened up Mission Conference American Division play by losing a tough 26-24 contest at Mt. San Antonio College Saturday afternoon at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
A 43-yard field goal by Mt. SAC's Jeremy Gener with 1:05 left in the game gave the Mounties the win.
Trailing 23-14 after three quarters, the Vikings rallied for two scoring drives to retake the lead late in the game.
Sophomore Froylan Sanchez booted a 42-yard field goal at the 12:02 mark and freshman quarterback Josh Powell ran in his second touchdown of the game, a two-yard QB keeper, to cap a four-play, 45-yard drive to give Long Beach a 24-23 lead with four minutes left in the fourth.
But on the ensuing drive, the Mounties marched 54 yards over 10 plays to set up Gener’s game-winning kick.
The Vikings nearly stopped the Mounties during the drive, but were unable to hold them on a fourth-down and four-yards to go from their own 45-yard line. Mt. SAC QB Jake Fadden hit Michael Waller for an eight-yard reception to pick p the first down and keep the drive alive.
Turnovers proved costly for Long Beach, as it fumbled three times and threw one interception. The LBCC ground game was also ineffective, running 22 times for net of -21 yards.
Powell was sacked seven times for a loss 51 yards to amass the majority of the negative yardage. He threw for 165 yards on 15 for 30 passing and also ran for a 41-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.
Freshman running back Troy Guthrie also had a two-yard TD run in the first to get the Vikings on the board.
Sophomore wide receiver LaTroy Dinkins caught six passes for 108 yards to lead the LBCC offense.
Sophomore corner back Ryan Howard led the Vikings defense with 8 total tackles (6 solo) with 2 broken up passes. He also had 2 punt returns for 70 yards and 3 kickoff returns for 70 yards.
For Mt. SAC (5-1, 1-0 AD), Gener accounted for 14 of their 26 points, nailing field goals from 35, 32, 28, and 45 yards, to go along with 2 PATs.
Fadden threw for 186 yards on 20 of 32 passing with 1 TD and no interceptions.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the American Division play. The Vikings return to action next Saturday when they host Riverside in a 5 pm game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
