Football:
Vikings open division play with 41-10 thrashing of Mt. SAC

The Long Beach City College football team bounced back from a tough loss two weeks ago with a 41-10 blowout over visiting Mt. San Antonio College in both teams’ Mission Conference American Division opener Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Vikings led 28-3 at halftime and didn’t allow a Mt. SAC touchdown until late in the fourth quarter.

The LBCC defense set the table throughout the night for the Vikings. Freshman cornerback Ryan Howard (Bishop Montgomery HS) set up LBCC’s first score with his 50-yard interception return to the Mt. SAC 30-yard line. On the next play, sophomore quarterback Alex Aispuro (Jordan HS) connected with freshman wide receiver LaTroy Dinkins (Jordan HS) for the first of two touchdowns from 30 yards out to give LBCC a 7-0 lead with 3:57 left in the first.

The defense came up with another big play on Mt. SAC’s ensuing drive. Sophomore linebacker Willie Davis (Poly HS) picked off Mountie quarterback Dominic Breazeale’s pass and returned it 12 yards to Mt. SAC’s 41 yard line.

Five plays later, Aispuro hit Dinkins with a 25-yard touchdown pass to put LBCC up 14-0 at the 1:03 mark in the first.

Mt. SAC finally got on the board in second when Brian Giambastiani nailed a 37-yard field goal with 14:07 left to cut LBCC’s lead to 14-3.

Long Beach closed its first-half scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Grant Thorne (San Pedro HS) with 4:40 left to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive and send the Vikings into the locker room with a 28-3 advantage.

The LBCC defense came up big again in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns. Sophomore line backer Antonio Steele (Cleveland, OH) blocked Greg Woidneck’s punt and freshman line backer Peter Sio ran it in from 15 yards out for the easy score.

With 5:05 left in the third, sophomore strong safety Eddie Patterson (Cabrillo HS) picked up Breazeale’s fumble and ran it back 32 yards to post LBCC’s final points of the contest and give them the commanding 41-3 lead.

The Mounties finally broke in for a score when running back Marques Leonard closed a 10-play, 65-yard drive with his 13-yard TD run with 2:35 left to close the scoring, final score 41-10.

In just two quarters of work, Aispuro threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns on 12 of 18 passing. He also rushed 8 times for 12 yards, including a one-yard second-quarter touchdown.

Dinkins caught five passes for 92 yards with 2 TDs, while freshman wide receiver Ben Holloway (Detroit, MI) caught 3 passes for 100 yards.

On defense, Steele had a huge night, posting 10 total tackles (6 solo) and a blocked punt.

For Mt. SAC (2-4 overall, 0-1 MC AD), Breazeale threw for 99 yards on 13 of 20 passing with 2 Interceptions. Randall Brown led the Mounties on the ground with 20 carries for 72 yards. Wide receiver Travis Lee caught 7 passes for 59 yards. He also had 7 kick off returns for 170 yards, including a 70 yarder.

The win improved Long Beach to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in American Division play. The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Oct. 22) when they travel to Riverside for a 5 pm American Division game.
