Long Beach drops third straight, fall to Palomar 20-7
The Long Beach City College football team suffered a 20-7 Southern Conference loss against Palomar College on Saturday at Escondido High School.
The Vikings third straight loss dropped them to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Palomar improved to 6-2 and 2-2 in the SC.
For the third straight week, Long Beach scored a touchdown on its opening drive, but unlike last week at Saddleback, the Vikings were shut out the rest of the way.
Sophomore Josh Powell connected with sophomore wide receiver Stephen Burton for a 65-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and that would be all the scoring for the Vikings.
LBCC led 7-3 at halftime and nearly extended its lead late in the third. But Palomar stopped the Vikings on a fourth and goal from the one-yard line and turned around and went 99+ yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
Powell closed the game throwing for 200 yards on 15 of 31 passing with a TD and two interceptions.
Burton caught four passes for 96 yards and a TD and also had four kickoff returns for 101 yards.
Freshman running back Travell Washington rushed nine times for 70 yards. Freshman defensive back Roderick Cohn totaled nine tackles (8 solo) and broke up two passes.
The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Nov. 1) when they host Santa Ana College at 6 p.m. in the annual Homecoming Game. |
