Football:
Second-half comeback falls short, LBCC loses to Fullerton
The Vikings were edged by Fullerton College 22-20 in a Mission Conference American Division game Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Trailing 22-7 in the third quarter, Long Beach rallied for two late touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.
Neither team could really control the momentum of the game, which was slowed by a total of 32 penalties for a combined 334 yards.
Fullerton opened up the scoring first when LBCC freshman quarterback Josh Powell fumbled from his own 29-yard line. Brian Lowe picked up the ball and ran it in to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 10:50 left in the first.
The Hornets extended their lead to 14-0 when quarterback Luke Tracy hooked up with wide receiver Marquis Avery on a 26-yard TD pass at the 12:25 mark in the second.
A series of plays in the second led to the Vikings finally getting on the scoreboard.
Sophomore Froylan Sanchez’ 42-yard punt was downed at the Fullerton two-yard line. Two plays later, Fullerton QB Kyle Olson’s pass was intercepted by sophomore cornerback Ryan Howard at the 22 and ran back to the 10-yard line.
On the next play, freshman running back Ajai Williams stormed in for the 10-yard TD to make the score 14-7 with 6:35 to go in the second.
Fullerton took advantage of a LBCC fumble on the second-half kickoff to get possession on Long Beach’s 10-yard line. Three plays later, Olson hit Ray Magee for a 12-yard touchdown pass.
Fullerton went for two points on the PAT and converted thanks to a Tyler Dugan rush to jump to a 22-7 advantage.
The Vikings began their late-game push in the third. Powell tossed a six-yard TD to freshman wide receiver Curtis Thompson to cap an 11-play, 86-yard drive. The Vikings also went for two points on the PAT, but Powell was stuffed on his rush up the middle.
Long Beach closed the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass from freshman backup QB Andrew DeFelice to sophomore wide receiver David Muñoz with 6:54 left in the game, but the Vikings would get no closer.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in division play. Fullerton moved to 5-3 and 3-0.
LBCC returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 4) when it travels to Pasadena for a 5 pm division game.
