Second-half turnovers costly as Vikings fall to Santa Ana 35-20
The Long Beach City College football team suffered its fourth straight Southern Conference loss on Saturday, falling to visiting Santa Ana College by a final score of 35-20 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Long Beach (3-5, 0-4 SC) led 14-9 at halftime and jumped ahead 20-9 late in the third quarter before Santa Ana turned the game around.
Three LBCC turnovers as well as a bad snap on a punt attempt led to all 26 of Santa Ana’s second-half points and the Vikings didn’t score the rest of the way.
For the fourth week in a row, LBCC put together an impressive opening drive to score a touchdown as sophomore running back Darren Tubbs capped the eight-play, 72-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run.
Freshman wide receiver Chris Williams’ 69-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Josh Powell sent the Vikings to the locker room at halftime with the lead.
Tubbs capped another long LBCC drive (11 plays, 75 yards) with his second TD of the game, a six-yard run to close the Vikings scoring.
From that point, it was all Santa Ana (5-3, 1-3 SCC). Powell tossed a pair of costly interceptions, a LBCC fumble, and a misplayed snap on a punt formation handed the Dons the game.
Powell closed the game throwing for 234 yards on 20 of 27 passing with a TD and three interceptions. Williams caught six passes for 118 yards including his 69-yard TD. Tubbs ran 11 times for 44 yards and his two TDs.
Sophomore defensive back George Aludogbu led the LBCC with 11 tackles (six solo). His biggest play was stopping Santa Ana tight end Mario Pinedo at the one-yard line after a 13-yard reception on third and goal. The Dons elected to go for it on fourth down and the Viking defense held tough on the goal line stand to hold their 14-9 lead.
Long Beach looks to snap its losing streak next Saturday (Nov. 8) when it closes out the home schedule at 6 p.m. against Fullerton College at Veterans Memorial Stadium. |
