Long Beach advances to Round 2 of playoffs after 40-26 win over West L.A.

Sophomore running back Richard Nichols (Jordan HS) rushed for 141 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Jerryl Martin (Wilson) caught two touchdown passes to lead the Long Beach City College football team to a 40-26 win over West Los Angeles College Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the Mission Conference American Bowl.

The win advances the Vikings to Round 2 of the Southern California Regional Playoffs, where they will play at Saddleback College on Saturday (Nov. 27). Kickoff is set for 5 pm.

Nichols had the big game rushing, collecting 141 yards on 17 carries, including a 75-yard TD run in the second quarter. He was named Mission Conference American Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Martin had his best game of the season, hauling six passes for 102 yards with two touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Stanley Franks (Downey) also caught four passes for 65 yards with a 25-yard TD.

Freshman quarterback Alex Aispuro (Jordan) tossed three TDs for the fourth straight game and ended his day completing 14 of 29 passes for 219 yards.

LBCC led the contest 23-6 at halftime before the Oilers scored two unanswered touchdowns, cutting the lead to just three points (23-20).

But Martin caught his two TDs late in the third (6:28, 00:15) to give the Vikings back their 14 points advantage.

Long Beach made it 40-20 with a 42-yard field goal by sophomore Jeffrey Hastings with 4:54 left in the fourth before West L.A. got a touchdown on the board with nine seconds left in game.

For West L.A., running back Lorenzo Bursey led the Oilers with 19 carries for 82 yards, while wide receiver Cleveland Morris caught four passes for 58 yards.

Oiler QB Donavan Dooley threw 223 yards on 13 for 27 passing with two TDs and an interception.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 7-4 overall, while West L.A.’s season comes to an end at 7-4.
