Football:
Mike Reisbig named new head coach of LBCC football program

Long Beach City College Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Dr. John Fylpaa has announced that Mike Reisbig has been named the new head coach of the LBCC football program.

Former head coach Jerry Jaso will remain with the team as an assistant coach as a member of Reisbig’s staff.

“This change is a collaborative arrangement that will provide great opportunities for the players, the coaching staff and the community,” said Fylpaa. “Jerry Jaso is an outstanding coach who needs to be thanked and honored for his winning tradition at LBCC. He will continue to provide his expertise for the program. Mike Reisbig’s long history of coaching prepares him for this assignment and he has the full support of all of those connected with the program.”

Mike Reisbig originally joined the LBCC coaching staff in 1992 as an assistant for former head coach and current men’s athletic director Larry Reisbig.

Since then, Reisbig has held numerous positions on the coaching staff, including associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and has coached every offensive position for the Vikings.

“It will be a privilege and I look forward to serving as head coach at Long Beach City College,” said Reisbig. “I’m ready for it. I’ve been here at LBCC for 16 years and have learned a lot. I always saw this day coming, but just not this soon.”

During his coaching tenure at LBCC, the Vikings won a national championship in 1995, have captured five conference championships, and have made 10 bowl game appearances.

Prior to his arrival at LBCC, Reisbig totaled five years of head coaching experience at the high school level.

Reisbig was head coach at St. Anthony High School for two seasons (1987-88) and in 1987, he led his squad to a 9-3 record and a league championship. Reisbig was also head coach at Aquinas High School in San Bernardino from 1989-91.

From 1982-87, Reisbig was an assistant coach at Pasadena City College.

Reisbig earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cal Poly Pomona and earned his master’s at Azusa Pacific University.

Jaso recently ended his fifth season as head coach of the Vikings with a 22-30 overall record. His 2004 (7-5) and 2005 (8-3) squads won back-to-back Mission Conference American Division championships and were American Bowl winners. But Jaso suffered two consecutive losing seasons (2006, 3-7; 2007, 2-7) before stepping down.

“I have a great level of respect for Jerry,” Reisbig said. “I enjoyed working with him these past five years.”

Reisbig will guide the Vikings into the newly formed Southern California Football Association next season. Long Beach is set to compete in the National Division’s Southern Conference.
