George Mehale Head Coach: George Mehale

George Mehale begins his first season as head coach of the LBCC men's cross country team in 2008. He also serves as an assistant coach with the track and field team.

Mehale brings extensive coaching experience at the collegiate level to LBCC.

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach in charge of distance runners at Oklahoma State University in 1984. He then made his way to Southern California and coached distance and middle distance athletes for four years at USC (1985-1988). While at USC, Mehale coached under former LBCC head track and field coach Ron Allice.

Following USC, Mehale served as an assistant track coach in charge of sprints and middle distance at Long Beach State (1989-91).

Following Long Beach State, Mehale landed his first head coaching job at Pasadena City College (1991-92). In 1992, he was named South Coast Conference men’s track coach of the year.

Mehale was also a standout athlete in college. At the University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP), Mehale was a three-time indoor track and field All-American after taking second place in the 600 yards (1980), two-mile relay (1981), and 880 yards (1982).

During his four-year career at UTEP, he was a member of 10 NCAA national championship teams (four outdoor, three indoor, two cross country). He also won nine individual conference championships.

Mehale has also been successful in business. From 1984-1992, he owned and operated Scientific Sports and Fitness before running Cardio-Beat Fitness Health Club in Long Beach from 1992-2006.

Mehale earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from UTEP in 1992 and received his master’s in sports management and administration from California State University, Long Beach in 1990.

Mehale currently resides in Long Beach.
