Men’s Soccer:
Vikings open 2006 season with 3-1 win over Desert
Freshman forward Arturo Guizar (Bellflower HS) scored two goals and freshman forward Aaron Gutcher (Mayfair HS) added two assists to lead the Long Beach City College men’s soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference win at home over College of the Desert in its 2006 season opener on Wednesday.
The Vikings got on the board first in the 12th minute. Sophomore Ivan Valencia fed Guizar with a breakaway from the right side. Guizar beat COD goalie Eduardo Moreno to the pass and chipped in the easy goal to give LBCC a 1-0 advantage.
Desert (0-2) tied it up just moments before the halftime whistle. Midfielder Frankie Resendiz’ goal in the 45th minute evened the game at 1-1.
In the 54th minute, freshman defender Jesse Sandoval (Paramount HS) gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead with his goal coming from the first of two assists from Gutcher.
Guizar sealed the win with his second goal in the 65th minute thanks to Gutcher’s second assist.
In goal for LBCC, sophomore Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco) picked up three saves to lead the Vikings.
“It was a good way to start the season,” said third-year co-head coach Pat Noyes. “We had plenty of chances that we didn’t finish, so we know we have some things to work on.”
Long Beach (1-0) returns to action on Friday (Sep 1) when it travels to San Bernardino Valley for a 4 pm non-conference game.
