Men’s Soccer:
Long Beach mistake allows
Rio Hondo to tie game

A strange goal late in the game allowed Rio Hondo College to tie the Long Beach City men's soccer team, 1-1, in a nonconference game Wednesday.

With LBCC leading, 1-0, in the 82nd minute, sophomore goalie Chris DeWalt played a ball he thought had been ruled offside and dropped it to the ground. The play, however, hadn't been called offside and a Rio Hondo player collected the ball and put it into the open net to tie the game.

The Vikings took the lead in the 12th minute when freshman midfielder Michael Pentland scored on a cross from fellow freshman Kevin Morgan. LBCC co-coach Cameron Beaulac said the Vikings (3-0-2) had other chances to score in the first half but never converted.

DeWalt made two saves and Beaulac praised the play of LBCC's defense.

Long Beach hosts College of the Desert at 4 p.m. Friday.
