Men’s Soccer:
LBCC completes second-half comeback, beats Rio Hondo 2-1

Long Beach City College got second-half goals from freshmen Arturo Guizar (Bellflower HS) and Rene Chicas (South Gate HS) to come-from-behind and beat visiting Rio Hondo College 2-1 in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

The Vikings trailed 1-0 after a Rio Hondo goal in the 35th minute by Arnulfo Higuera. Higuera stole a ball from a defender deep in LBCC territory and nailed his shot past goalie Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco HS) for the lead.

But the second half was all Long Beach. The Vikings outshot Rio Hondo by a 14-1 margin in the second on their way to two corner kick goals.

Guizar’s score came in the 50th minute off a cross-pass from sophomore Alex Placko (Wilson HS) to tie the game.

Then in the 55th minute, sophomore Santiago Busatto (Wilson HS) found Chicas free in front of the net on another corner kick try. Chicas slipped his shot by Rio Hondo goalie Gabriel Barriga for the eventual game-winning goal.

Welch posted 4 saves to lead the Vikings to win. LBCC remains unbeaten this season at 4-0-1. Rio Hondo dropped to 4-3-0 after the loss.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Sep 15) when it hosts Santiago Canyon College in a 4 pm non-conference game.
