Men’s Soccer:
Vikings crack NSCAA/adidas national rankings for first time in school history

Long Beach City College can now claim its has two powerhouse soccer teams.

For the first time in school history, the LBCC men’s soccer team has cracked the National Soccer Coaches Association/adidas junior college Division III national rankings. The Vikings are listed No. 18 in this week’s week rankings.

Second-year co-head coaches Cameron Beaulac and Pat Noyes Vikings’ have quietly opened up the season with a 4-1-1 record.

LBCC’s lone loss of the season came on Sunday when the Vikings fell to No. 10 Mt. San Antonio College 1-0 in the championship game of the Allan Hancock Tournament.

Mt. SAC got the game-winning goal in the 11th minute of extra-time in the second half to hand Long Beach its lone loss of 2005.

Also at the Hancock Tournament, freshman defender Alex Placko (Wilson HS) was named the tournament’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.

It’s been a good couple of weeks for LBCC men’s soccer. The Long Beach Press-Telegram recently released its boy’s soccer Dream Team and the Vikings had four of its current members and a coach make the squad.

Freshman Hugo Ayala (Poly) was a first-team Dream Team pick, while Placko, goalkeeper Brendan Welch (St. John Bosco), and midfielder Felipe Ramos (Bellflower) all were named to the second team.

Also, Beaulac was named Coach of the Year for his effort at Long Beach Poly High School.

The Vikings return to action this afternoon when they travel to Rio Hondo College for a 4 pm non-conference game.
