Men’s Soccer:
Vikings shutout Santiago Canyon to remain unbeaten
A second-half goal by sophomore midfielder Marcos Canseco (Millikan HS) was all the offense the Long Beach City College men’s soccer team needed to post a 1-0 non-conference win over visiting Santiago Canyon College Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco HS) made just one save in goal to help the Vikings post their second shutout of the season and improve their record to 5-0-1 overall.
Santiago Canyon played a strong defensive game despite being short-handed on the field for the entire second half. Midfielder John Allan was issued a red card in the 39th minute for an intentional hard foul, reducing SCC to just 10 players on the field.
The game remained scoreless until the 63rd minute. Canseco took freshman forward Arturo Guizar’s (Bellflower HS) breakaway pass and nailed his shot past SCC goalie Carson Hedrick for the eventual game-winning goal.
Hedrick has a busy time in the net, as the Vikings outshot Santiago Canyon (2-2-1) by a 15-6 margin. Hedrick posted 6 saves in the losing effort.
The Vikings return to action on Monday (Sep 18) when they travel to Palomar College for a 4pm non-conference game.
